Objectives

To report statistics relating to all Road Traffic Incidents (RTIs) reported to the police in Great Britain in 2013.

Methodology

Statistics are compiled from the STATS19 database of road traffic RTIs.

Key Findings

In 2013:

  • 1 per cent RTIs involving a car had “animal or object in carriageway” recorded as a contributory factor.

  • 3 per cent of RTIs involving a car had “exceeding the speed limit” recorded as a contributory factor.

  • 4 per cent of RTIs involving a car had “following too close” recorded as a contributory factor.

  • 4 per cent of RTIs involving a car had “sudden braking” recorded as a contributory factor.

  • 7 per cent of RTIs involving a car had “loss of control” recorded as a contributory factor.

  • Less than 1 per cent of RTIs involving a car had “not displaying lights at night or in poor visibility” recorded as a contributory factor.

This report gives an indication of the contributory factors that might be related to the technologies of interest.
